Disney Debuts first look at “Mary Poppins Returns” during Oscars…

Disney premiered the official teaser trailer for Mary Poppins Returns tonight during the 2018 Oscars. The Robert Marshall (Chicago) directed movie began production back in February of this year after being announced in September of 2015. Emily Blunt was announced as the titular character in February of 2016, in the sequel to 1964’s beloved Mary Poppins. The movie is still currently filming so fans were skeptical that a trailer would be prepared in time for Disney’s D23 Expo, but it appears that those fans didn’t have anything to worry about after all.

Emily Blunt was the perfect choice for the role of Mary Poppins and she looks and sounds stunning. The story takes place 25 years after the original movie in 1935, right in the middle of the Great Depression when Mary returns after Michael suffers a personal loss, which has left him and his family numb and joyless. The teaser trailer comes after an incredibly short clip of the movie was shown during a sizzle reel on Friday. The brief clip shows Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack exclaiming “It’s a good thing you come along when you did, Mary Poppins!”

Mary Poppins Returns will be released to theaters on December 25th, 2018 and is drawn from a number of source materials, namely PL Travers’ original 7 books, and takes place during the mid thirties, which is when the original books were set. The movie stars Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack, Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks, Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks, Pixie Davis as Annabel Banks, Joel Dawson as Georgie Banks, Nathaniel Saleh as John Banks, Julie Walters as Ellen, Meryl Streep as Topsy Poppins, Colin Firth as William Weatherall Wilkins, Dick Van Dyke as Mr. Dawes Jr., and Angela Lansbury as Balloon Lady.

Lin-Manuel Miranda has been quoted as saying that “he’s in the middle of a dream job dancing with Emily Blunt all day, extremely grateful to be here.” Miranda’s sentiment has been echoed by many from the cast who are just overjoyed to be a part of such an iconic project. The original movie came out in 1964 and quickly became one of Disney’s most beloved movies. The sequel will come out 54 years after the original movie, making it one of the longest gaps between movie sequels in film history.

While we still have quite a long wait for Mary Poppins Returns, it was a treat to finally see some footage from the upcoming sequel. As previously stated, Mary Poppins Returns will hit theaters on Christmas Day, 2018 in the North America, which is the perfect time for a Mary Poppins movie. Until then, make sure to check out the brand new teaser trailer for the movie below.
